Caftan or Takchita: Understanding the Difference
Learn how a Moroccan caftan differs from a two-layer takchita and when each traditional garment is worn.
One layer or two
A caftan is a single long garment, usually finished with sfifa braid and aakad buttons. It can be simple enough for a family lunch or richly embroidered for Eid and weddings.
A takchita is composed of two coordinated layers: the tahtiya beneath and an open fouqia above. A mdamma belt defines the waist. This extra structure makes the takchita the more formal choice and a fixture of Moroccan wedding celebrations.
Choose a caftan for versatility and a takchita when the invitation calls for ceremony, volume and unmistakable grandeur.
